SO you want to make yourself a blog header

blog-header

Something that may come as a surprise is that I am not actually a qualified graphic designer, I just like to make blog headers for the fun of it.  Whilst I have no formal qualification, I have spent A LOT of time and money in learning various design skills and how to draw illustrations in order to do this. It really gives me so much enjoyment being able to bring ideas to life.

That being said, I wanted to share my secrets on how I make a blog header and how, if you really want to, can learn to make them yourself. After all, us bloggers like to have a combination of different skills right? The size I used to make blog headers is 1146 x 300 px which works for most WordPress and Blogger themes.

1. Fonts

This is one of my favourite things about creating a blog header, I have quite the collection of fonts, which I have built of over time. The place that I find most of my fonts from is Creative Market. My two favourite font packages are:

  • 94 in 1 Font Bundle – to me this was worth every penny. 94 beautiful fonts for $18 (I live in the UK and I am still able to purchase these GBP equivalent is £13.00 which to me is just SUCH a bargain). Just remember if you want to use these fonts to sell on you must have an extended licence.
  • 116 Fonts and Graphics Bundle – another amazing bundle for a great price. I love the variation that these two packages give me. This package is slightly cheaper at $15.00 (£11.33) so I would really recommend purchasing one of these if you would like to spruce up your blog. [Don’t forget you can use fonts for more than just blog headers, the list is endless, blog signatures, media kits, insta-story templates – the list is endless.

2. Watercolour Background

If you have seen my work you will know that my signature style is using a watercolour background to fill out the space. Again, I have bought most of mine from Creative Market [because quite frankly they are the best website]. My favourite ones are:

  • Watercolour Backgrounds and Splashes – I just love the colour variations of this product, there are also SO many things that you can do with them. Often, instead of using them as a background smudge, I will turn them into the font colour, or fill shapes, or my illustrations with. The possibilities are endless and it is only $4.00 (£3.00).
  • By Lef – this particular designer’s shop is one on my favourites. There are SO many beautiful watercolour creations on there that would make any blog related graphic design product look beautiful with little difficulty. Their products range in price but this is one of my favourite ones and just only $7.00 (£5.29). Watercolour Floral Wreaths

3. Illustrations

Whilst now I draw all of my own illustrations there are many packages which provide ample selection of illustrations to use in your blog graphics. MY most love package is this incredible bundle which provides SO many different products in one purchase. I tend to turn to these graphics at seasonal times such as Halloween and Christmas when I am asked to make one off blog headers for just that time of the month. There is only one package that gets my vote here and that is:

  • 16300 in 1 – Graphic Giant Bundle – 16300 different illustrations, fonts and other amazing patterns and backgrounds. It really is worth EVERY penny, especially if you want to start making things for your own blog. It is the most expensive product on my must have list at $24.00 (£18.00) but to me it was just so worth making that investment.

If you have got to the end of this post [thanks] I have a secret tip to share with you. Every week, Creative Market release six free graphic products to everyone who signs up to their website [it is totally free btw]. Some of their products that they release are AMAZING [well actually they all are]. For example, this week, one of the free gifts are Instagram story templates, which you can use FOR FREE and Lightroom presets!!! It really is the highlight of my week on Monday morning seeing what products you can download. Here is what else they have this week. Honestly, it’s just SO worth it.

If you have any questions, or would like to make your own blog header, please get in touch, although this is my business, I would be MORE than happy to help you make it yours too [or even if you just want to make it for yourself].

*The links in this blog post are affiliate links [please be nice Blogging By Soph is SO excited to be working with one of my favourite companies ever]. If you use the links to sign up to Creative Market or purchase some of the products I have mentioned I do get a very small commission. If you don’t want to use my affiliate link I totally understand and I would be happy to provide you with non aff. links. [but thanks in advance if you do use them]!
